What is Parent and Family Engagement?

“Parent and Family engagement refers to the systematic inclusion of families in activities and programs that promote children’s development, learning, and wellness, including in the planning, development, and evaluation of such activities, programs and systems.”

PFE strategies may involve:

  • Outreach
  • Direct involvement
  • Title I or LAP program specific information, and
  • a variety of other activities that focus on fostering two-way communication with families

Family engagement may occur during the regular school day and within the school building, outside the school day, or within the community.

Research tells us that students with engaged parents and families are more likely to:

  • Learn to read faster (exhibit faster rates of literacy acquisition)
  • Have higher grades and test scores
  • Are promoted more and take more challenging classes
  • Adapt better to school and have better attendance
  • Have better social skills and behavior
  • Graduate
