Life science is the study of living things. Throughout the year we will be studying all about living things. We start the year off studying ecosystems and how living things interact in an ecosystem; how they interact with other living things (biotic factors) and non-living things (abiotic factors). We next work our way into biomes which are similar ecosystems found throughout the entire Earth. We then move into studying about how we determine if something is living or not. You may not be aware that people still argue about what makes us know if something is alive or not--even in this day and age. We then move into studying cells and how cells reproduce. Some cells have very specific functions and we learn all about these functions as we move into studying human body systems (like the nervous system, circulatory system, etc.). We will be doing a lot of dissecting of different organisms and comparing their organ systems to ours. I call this part of the class Comparative Anatomy. Students really enjoy this part of the class with all the cutting open of different organisms and stuff. Plants are the next type of organisms we study which finishes off the year. Throughout the year we do many investigations and projects that help students apply what they learn and evaluate their learning. Below you will find a link to each week as we move along through the year.
