Hills in Arctic Canada with Impact Origin. While most hills and mountains on Earth originate from tectonic motions or volcanism, Earth also has some examples of hills that originated from impacts of large meteorites, the predominant origin for hills and mountains on the Moon. The grey hills in this image from Devon Island in arctic Canada are material ejected from an impact about 20 million years ago. The site is at 75 degrees north latitude. Researchers' tents at the left give a sense of scale.

Earth science is the study of the Earth and its place in space as well as Earth itself. We start off the year studying the insides of the earth and how it has an effect on theoutside. We will be looking at plate tectonics, convection currents in the mantle, plate movements, history of plate movement, volvanism, earthquakes, rocks and rock formation (the rock cycle), and a whole lot of other stuff related to our Earth. We next move into how Earth fits into the universe and what makes it a special place for life to exist. As we study astronomy, we will look at how the planets formed, how the stars formed and are still forming, how the universe formed and is still forming, etc. Weather will be our next subject and focuses on how weather effects our planet. Hurricanes, tornados, snow, rain, hail, etc. will be subjects we study and how they effect us. These concepts will lead us to
